Martin Staniland received his B.A. in History from Cambridge University, his M.A. in African Studies from the University of Ghana, and his Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University. He taught at the University of Glasgow before coming to the United States. Once in the States, he was a post-doctoral Fellow at UCLA, and a Research Fellow at the University of California-Berkeley and Harvard. He came to the University of Pittsburgh in 1984 and joined the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs as an Associate Professor. He was subsequently promoted to full professor and served as Interim Dean of GSPIA from 1995-1997. He currently directs two GSPIA programs- International Affairs and International Development.

Martin Staniland has published on African Politics and the political economy of both the developing world and Europe. His books include: The Lions of Dagbon: Political Change in Northern Ghana (Cambridge), What is Political Economy? (Yale), American Intellectuals and African Nationalists (Yale), Government Birds: The State and Air Transport in Western Europe (Roman & Littlefield), and A Europe of the Air? (forthcoming).
